Cooking with Father

This sculpture is a transcription of a photograph from an article about masculinity and fatherhood  and is my take on the mode of manliness and virility through becoming a father. This is then further reinforced into a masculine role by adopting a role of being a ‘good father’. “He’s a good dad!” is something you…

Magician

This sculpture was a product of one day’s work so intensely that it left me feeling totally drained and exhausted. The idea started off by working with building site materials – continuing with the use of industrial, house building material to bring the world of manly occupation into art. I’m aware of stereotyping builders into…

Bronze Casting in Wales

For my continuous professional development at University of Chichester, I had the opportunity to go on a weekend course in bronze casting at New British Art in Wales. That was lucky! I learned a tremendous amount in a very short space of time and was then equipped well enough to replicate this process on the…

Innocent X

Clay sculpture that originated from a mould where the clay was able to harden just enough to be strong enough to hold up but not too hard so as not to be malleable any more. From this start I keep changing the pose, shape and detail until i reach an image – a face that…

Bearded Man – fired clay

This is a reworked, revisited rebuilt piece using recycled, reclaimed and reconstituted brick clay. Lots of ‘re – somethings’ in this case, but the effect is quite impressive. The process is to use an existing rubber mould to build the clay piece, let it dry for a week, take it out of the mould and…

Beard Man – finished

I’m so pleased with the outcome of this firing! The clay used was a recycled bit of brick clay, reconstituted from discarded faulty bricks before they were fired. Clay originated from Rudgwick Brickworks and has been fired to 1300C bringing out the colour and the shine naturally occurring in the clay – no glazes.

Hearts

The job of being an artist leads you on a different path every day. Today I have been making wire hearts of all things! It seems a random thing to do but I am developing a prototype for a commission for St Catherine’s Hospice for an event planned for September 2018. I am at early stages…

Serenity

As part of my investigations into the theme of masculinity I was making heads of imaginary people accentuating some features to find out what certain ways of doing things would do to the interpretations of a particular image. I have also started utilising man made materials, some with an industrial and domestic use, to see…

Men

I started off this line of enquiry by looking into expressions on a man’s face while utilising the stereotypes of what a man should look like. The idea ‘man’s head’ can conjure plenty of images in my mind and I wanted to use these ideas to create an imaginary set of heads to stand as…

Beard Head

This is clearly a work in progress piece and will have a couple of stages to it yet. First of all it will need drying and firing and then possibly glazing if it survives the process. I have already done one like this that has, unfortunately, exploded in the kiln so I’ve made some alterations…
